Attacking Session #10: Possession

Activity 31: Warm up

Organization:

• Put players in 12 x 12 yard grids
• All players – including goalkeepers – play 5 v 2; 6 v 2 or 7 v 2
• Keep the ball away from the two defenders
• If a defender wins the ball he is out and the player who made the error is in

Coaching points:

• Establish a rhythm
• Simple and quick play
• Create triangles
• Ball movement
• Player movement

Activity #2: 3 v 1

Organization:

• In a 12 x 12 yard grid
• Players play 3 v 1 with 2 touch restriction
• Rotate the defender and play for 7 or 8 minutes

Coaching points:

• Player on the ball should always have two options to pass
• Simple and quick
• Create triangles
• Ball movement
• Player movement

Activity #3: 4 v 1

Organization:

• Increase the grid to 15 x 15 yards
• Play 4 v 1 with a one touch restriction
• Rotate the defender

Coaching points:

• Create passing lanes
• Keep hips open to see the field
• Simple and quick
• Create triangles
• Ball movement
• Player movement

Activity #4:

Organization:

• 11 players in the center circle
• 4 attacking players on the outside as shown
• 2 red neutral players
• 4 blue defenders
• The outside group try to possess the ball using the neutral players inside the circle to make a 4 v 4 + 3
• If the defending team wins the ball or possession is lost they change positions
• Play for 20 minutes

Coaching points:

• Simple play
• Quick play Create triangles
• Ball movement
• Player movement
