Purpose

To work on ball control in a game-like manner.

Setup

An antenna is used to split the court down the middle, creating two courts. Three players set up on side A and three players set up on side B of court 1 on the left. Three players set up on side A and three players set up on side B of court 2 on the right. For each group of three, a passer and setter are on the court, and one player is on the endline behind the court ready to enter. A coach is on the sideline with a cart of balls.

Run the Drill

1. A coach or player tosses the ball into play on side A.

2. Side A passes, sets and hits a controlled shot or swing to side B.

3. The player at the net on side A who set the ball runs to the endline and touches the endline.

• The player off of the court enters to pass.

• The player who just hit the ball moves to the net to set the next pass.

4. Side B goes through the same sequence.

5. The coach is ready to toss in a new ball as quickly as possible.

6. The goal is to reach 30 pass, set and hit sequences in a row without the ball hitting the floor.

Coaching Points

• If the teams are not reaching the goal, set a time limit. This adds urgency to the drill.

• Use this drill to help the less-experienced players learn the flow of the game. Provide direction as needed.

Variations

• Dictate what type of shot must be made: roll, tip, two-handed set, back-row attack or 50-percent swing.

• Increase or decrease the number of sequences required.
