Deny the Post Drill

Setup

  • Use four players and one basketball.
  • There is one player on each wing outside the three-point arc and two players are on the low block. There is one player on offense and the other on defense.
  • The offensive player starts the drill on the low block facing the wing; the defensive player begins in a three-quarters deny stance with a hand in the passing lane.

Execution

  1. The offensive player works to get open while the defensive player attempts to deny the pas; this continues for 30 seconds (figure 7.11).Deny the Post
  2. If the offensive player is not open, the passer on the wing swings the ball to the opposite wing. The offensive player then follows the basketball from one block to the other.
  3. If a pass is completed to the offensive player on the block, the defensive player quickly changes to inside position between their opponent
and the basket. Once inside position is gained, the offensive player passes the basketball back to the wing and the drill continues.
  4. If the defensive player creates a deflection or steals the pass, the defensive player immediately passes the basketball back to the wing and the drill continues.
  5. Players repeat the drill for 30 seconds and then complete two more sets.

Coaching Point

While in the three-quarters deny stance, the defensive player uses the outside hand to create a barrier by moving the arm up and down like a windshield wiper.
